ReFiber Calls for ‘Freedom from Unused Garments’ This Independence Day, Takes Textile Circularity From Mumbai to a Nationwide Movement

ReFiber urges citizens to turn unused clothes into a resource this 15th August After collecting 2.7 tonnes of post-consumer textiles through its Mumbai demonstration

MUMBAI, NATIONAL, 13 AUGUST, 2026 | APN NEWS: Responsible textile waste management is an important step towards a more sustainable and circular future. This Independence Day, ReFiber, powered by OterRi, is inviting citizens to participate in ‘Freedom from Unused Garments’, a collection drive on 15 August 2026. Citizens can schedule a doorstep pickup of their unused garments through the ReFiber app, with collected textiles directed towards reuse, recycling and further processing.

The initiative encourages citizens to extend the lifecycle of their garments while contributing to more responsible textile consumption. The campaign is being undertaken in collaboration with Tisser, Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and Lions International, bringing together stakeholders from the industry, sustainability and community ecosystems.

The virtual initiative will be graced by Ms. Vrunda Desai, Textile Commissioner, Maharashtra Government, as Chief Guest. Extending her best wishes to ReFiber and its partners, Ms. Desai has expressed support for the initiative’s focus on encouraging citizen participation and greater awareness around responsible textile management, reuse and circularity.

The campaign builds on ReFiber’s Mumbai Textile Circular Economy Demonstration Project, conducted on World Environment Day 2026. The demonstration collected 2.7 tonnes of post-consumer textiles, generating 275 collection orders from 257 citizens through 15 laundry partners across 28 branches. It demonstrated the potential of leveraging existing city service networks to facilitate organised first-mile textile collection without creating parallel logistics infrastructure.

Mr. Shrikant Bhangdiya, Chairman, ReFiber Initiative, said," "The success of the Mumbai demonstration has given us important insights into how textile waste collection can be made more organised, accessible and scalable. The response from citizens and our network partners has shown that there is a clear opportunity to build greater participation around responsible textile management. Our aim is to take these learnings forward and work towards a model that can be replicated across cities and eventually support a nationwide movement for textile circularity. ‘Freedom from Unused Garments’ is an important step towards that larger vision."

Mr. Manoj Wanvari, COO, OterRi & ReFiber, said," Textile circularity requires collective participation from citizens, industry, government and sustainability partners. Our Mumbai project demonstrated how technology and existing service networks can enable an organised first-mile collection ecosystem. Through this campaign, we aim to make responsible garment collection more accessible and strengthen pathways for reuse and recycling, with the learnings eventually contributing to a model that can be replicated across cities."
The campaign also underscores the importance of collaboration between government, industry, sustainability organisations and citizens in developing a more organised textile collection ecosystem. Building on the Mumbai demonstration, ReFiber aims to take these learnings forward and explore their potential to support textile circularity at a wider scale across India.

About ReFiber
ReFiber, powered by OterRi, is a technology-enabled circular economy platform designed to transform how India collects, tracks and recovers post-consumer textile waste. Rather than functioning as a standalone collection drive, ReFiber integrates digital citizen engagement, doorstep collection through OterRi's established laundry and delivery network, source segregation, material traceability and impact reporting into a single ecosystem. Through partnerships with organisations such as Tisser, CMAI, UNIDO and World Trade Center Mumbai, ReFiber aims to build a scalable, replicable Digital Public Infrastructure for textile circularity—from a single city demonstration towards a state-wide and eventually national model.

Government Assistance Helps Jain Community Observe Ayambil Oli Smoothly Amid LPG Concerns

Jain Community Appreciates Maharashtra Govt’s Support

MUMBAI/ MAHARASHTRA, NATIONAL, 3rd APRIL, 2026 (APN NEWS AGENCIES): Across India, *Ayambil Oli* is observed every year by the Jain community in thousands of numbers. On this sacred occasion, the Government of Maharashtra has extended significant support by ensuring the adequate availability of gas cylinders for the Jain community, thereby helping in the smooth conduct of our religious practices. The entire Jain community expresses its deep gratitude to the Government of Maharashtra for this valuable assistance.

In light of the recent geopolitical circumstances that led to issues related to LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) supply, we sincerely appreciate the prompt and commendable steps taken by the Government of Maharashtra to address and resolve the situation. On behalf of the entire Jain community, we extend our heartfelt thanks for their timely intervention.

In Jainism, *Ayambil Oli* is considered a highly rigorous and disciplined form of penance (fasting practice). According to its principles, only one meal a day (*Ekasan*) is consumed. The food is simple—prepared without oil, ghee, spices, or tempering—and is usually boiled, plain, and minimally cooked. Many individuals also consume raw or lightly boiled food. The preparation process itself is simple and requires minimal cooking.

Under normal circumstances, LPG consumption is higher, as meals are prepared 2–3 times a day, involving processes such as frying, tempering, and making items like rotis and vegetables, which require more cooking time and prolonged gas usage. However, during Ayambil, since food is prepared only once a day, there is an estimated saving of about 60–70% in gas consumption. Typically, a gas cylinder lasts around 30 days, whereas during Ayambil, the same cylinder may last approximately 45–60 days.

In many households, *collective Ayambil* (community meals) are organized, which further reduces the number of utensils used and the overall cooking effort, leading to additional gas savings. Due to the simplicity and minimal cooking involved in Ayambil food, the duration of gas usage is significantly reduced. Overall, during this entire Ayambil observance, thousands of gas cylinders have been saved, which is a matter of pride for the Jain community.

This initiative by the Government of Maharashtra has conveyed a positive message across the Jain community and has further strengthened public trust and confidence in the government.
